Creating a Power BI Report Wireframe for Better Visualization

Power BI Report Wireframe A Step-by-Step Guide
5/5 - (1 vote)

A Power BI report wireframe is a simple visual plan that outlines the report’s layout, showing where visuals, tables, filters, and KPIs will be placed. It helps in designing a clear, user-friendly report by organizing content effectively.

You can also share the wireframe with stakeholders or clients so they can add their requirements for the Power BI report. This helps both the developer and the stakeholders. Based on the wireframe, you can then design the main Power BI report.

Power BI doesn’t have a built-in wireframe tool, but you can create one using Microsoft whiteboard, Miro whiteboard, PowerPoint, Figma, or even a hand-drawn sketch. Below is an example of a basic wireframe layout for a Power BI report, highlighting key elements.

Header Section:

  • Logo: Your company’s logo (if applicable).
  • Title of the Report: At the top of the report page.

Filters/Slicers Section:

  • Filters/Slicers: Slicers for filtering the report (e.g., Region, Category, Sub Category, etc.)

KPI/Top-Level Metrics (Key Performance Indicators):

  • Located near the top, typically below the filters/slicers.
  • Displays key metrics such as Total sales, Total profit, Total discount, etc.

Main Report Visuals:

Charts and graphs: These take up most of the report’s area. You might use visuals like bar charts, pie charts, line charts, and stacked columns.

  • Bar/Column Chart: Display sales by product category or region.
  • Line Chart: Show trends over time (e.g., monthly sales).
  • Pie Chart: Show the distribution of sales by region.
  • Tables or Matrix: Show the tabular data such as sales by category, subcategory & product details, etc.
  • Maps: Show the country, State & city-wise sales data
  • And many more.

Footer Section:

  • In the footer section of the report, you can display the dataset/report’s last refresh date, selected filter/slicer values, logged-in user’s email ID, page navigation, etc.

Wireframes help plan and organize your Power BI report’s layout. They give a clear visual guide for designers, developers, and stakeholders to ensure the report meets business needs.

This is a simple wireframe design to give you an idea of how to create a wireframe for a report. Based on your report requirements, you can add visuals and modify the design.
